Click and sniff – smellovision coming to video games
In recent years we’ve seen the rise of virtual reality video games with headsets such as the Occulus Rift, HTC Vive and Playstation VR. They allow a 3D immersive experience of the game by providing a stereo vision view of the world, making it more realistic, but what if you could also smell or even feel in video games?
The FeelReal Player is a crowdfunded project still in prototype. It clips onto your VR headset via a magnetic strip and features 255 different scents as well as blasting hot air, water mist and vibrations. It claims to give a “realistic immersive presence in virtual reality games or movies”.
Believe it or not FeelReal aren’t the first to dabble with smellovision video games. In 2016, South Park: The Fractured But Whole supported the ‘Nosulus Rift’, a nasal peripheral allowing players to really smell the farts!
