There are 36 million more males than females in China
In China there are 1.16 boys born for every girl. This is the second highest rate in the world (Liechtenstein has 1.26 boys for every girl).
In the 1970s China imposed a one-child-per-family policy after it saw it’s population double in just 30 years (check). The Chinese government claim it has prevented an extra 400 million people being born which they claim would have been a terrible strain on resources.
One side-effect of this policy has led to an increase in males. This is thought to be due to selective abortions of females. (If a family is only allowed one child they want it to be a male because males earn more)
