Rwanda has more women politicians than any other country
Rwanda has more women in legislative positions than any other country. 62% of its government is women. Even though half of the world’s population are women globally only about 25% of government positions are held by women.
Rwanda’s gender equality came from a dark place though. After the genocide a new constitution was created in 2003 and was deliberately made to be more progressive. It stipulated that at least 30% of the government should be women. The Rwanda Women Parliamentary Forum then developed a strategy to expand the number of seats held by women and were instrumental in anti-violence laws.
