We have 90% the same DNA as cats

All living organisms are part of an enormous genetic tree and they all carry genetic code in the same DNA molecule at the centre of their cells.

In this tree of life the chimpanzees are our closest cousins with 96% the same DNA. However we also share 50% the same DNA as a banana.

All humans have 99.9% the same DNA. We are all very similar, and experience life similarly, which is something to consider next time you fall out with your neighbour.

Bonus fact: Twins are born with the same DNA, but over time their DNA reorganises itself and their genes are no longer the same.
