Neotame is the world’s strongest artificial sweetener. It is roughly 7000-13000 times sweeter than sugar. It is owned by Monsanto and currently used in food production worldwide.
Aspartame, another commonly used sweetener, is only 200 times sweeter than sugar. It was discovered accidentally when a scientist testing an anti-ulcer drug licked his finger and discovered that it had a pleasing sweet taste.
